Leaders of the North West’s largest exporting companies met with
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the Minister for Trade and
Investment Lord Davies recently to launch a new Government
initiative in support of Small and Medium Enterprises. The
initiative, entitled “Gateway to Global Growth”, is aimed at
assisting SME’s with exports, and provides a package of specialist
financial and legal advice toward this purpose. During a tour of high-technology engineering firm EDM, Brown and Davies addressed the business leaders, emphasizing the importance of SME export during the current financial situation in the UK. As pointed out by the Prime Minister during his address, exports currently represent 29% of UK GPD, and it is the Government’s intention to increase this figure via aid of the new initiative. “We need to export our way out,” said Brown. “The UK is recognized around the world as an innovator,” Lord Davies told The Manufacturer. “Within British manufacturing there are some great examples of success. We have to be international in our mind set commercially and what UK Trade and Investment has to do is facilitate trade.” UK Trade and Investment has played a significant part in securing major contracts between other continents and innovation-based SME’s in the UK, and the present £3.5m scheme is expected to put around 1250 businesses through the programme during the next year by providing access to services and third party support. The initiative is scheduled to go live on April 1. To read more news articles, please go to our business blog here | |||
