US-based Trident Microsystems have acquired video and audio chip lines
from Micronas Semiconductor, a chip firm from Switzerland. Included in
this acquisition is the Semiconductor IP for an assortment of audio,
demodulator and frame rate converter (FRC) products.
It was back
in February that Micronas commenced the process of looking for a
purchaser for its consumer division with the hope that they would be
able to continue with some of their business and keep their staff. The
benefit to them of this transaction is the attainment of seven million
shares of Trident common stock and the authorisation to purchase up to 3
million more Trident shares.
As the deal was announced in April,
Dr. Wolfgang Kalsbach from Micronas stated, “We are very satisfied that
we found a new owner for the business, who will retain a number of
employees in Germany, the Netherlands and our oversees locations”.
Trident has been through a program of expansion, increasing its activities
within the European market. Their European headquarters are to be based
in Munich where they have a design centre. Other centres in Europe are
located in Freiburg, Germany and Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
Trident’s CEO and President, Sylvia Summers Couder, commented, “This
acquisition is an important step and catalyst in achieving our vision to
re-emerge as a leading DTV multimedia solutions provider”.
