Intel increases stake in Imagination Technologies

Intel raises its stake in Imagination Technologies to 16%. Chief executive of Imagination technologies, Hossein Yassaie has defended the move as a “protective measure” by Intel due to Technologies’ position as supplier to many key players in the market.

He stated, “Certainly the likes of Intel and Apple are heavily dependent on us delivering current and future technologies, so if a company like that takes a stake in Imagination then it is really a protective measure.”

He continued, “They [Intel] have made it very clear that they have no intention of making a bid for the company.”

According to Mr Yassaie, Imagination Technologies’ success is a result of its independence but he did concede that customers need to feel that the company is ‘in safe hands’.

Imagination Technologies have just issued accounts which detail increased sales and pre-tax profits for the company over the last twelve months. Pro-rata sales have increased by 16% to £64.1 million, while adjusted pre-tax profits were up from £3.2 million to £5 million.

Trevor Selby, finance director at Imagination Technologies attributed these figures to increased revenue from licensing and royalties on their own silicon IP products. Royalty revenues rose to £14 million which is an increase of 29% while joint licensing and royalty revenues increased by 24% to £36.9 million. This resulted in a 701% increase in adjusted operating profits.

Mr Selby announced plans to continue to build on this licensing model to increase revenue and profits over the next 24 months. They are planning to increase their shipping from 86 million chips this year to 200 million chips in two years time. He said the royalties they have generated at present were based on only 16-20 chips with another 58 due for release over the next two years.

Information Technologies’ ‘Pure’ division has increased international trading and domestic sales look set to improve due to UK Government initiatives aimed to assist in the current economic slump.
